Everything

(Valerie Sciarra)
Valerie Sciarra

EVERYTHING is an observation of a playground in NYC.

Everywhere I go
I see people who I know aren't where they belong.
Do you think they know
There's a turn they might have missed back down the road.
There's a man holding the hand
Of a woman looking away
From a child she had much too soon
In a dark place on a dark day.
And there are those who think
They have everything.
Everywhere I turn
I see people who are burned by what life brings.
Do you think they say,
"What's the point of getting out of bed today?"
There's a woman wearing a suit
Working for a man in a tie
Whose child is failing from school
But doesn't have time to ask why.
And there are those who think
They have everything.
Is it really fair to tell all our children,
"You can be anything you want."
Does anybody really know what that means?
Everywhere I see
I see people just like me who see it too.
And sometimes we smile
Just to take a break from the sadness for a while.
There's a child who's tuned out the world
With a man who sits far away
From a woman sending a text
On another family day.
And there are those who think
They have everything.
There are those who know it's not everything
And there are those who say,
"Everything gets in the way."

Everywhere I go
I see people who I know aren't where they belong.
Do you think they know
There's a turn they might have missed back down the road.

There's a man holding the hand
Of a woman looking away
From a child she had much too soon
In a dark place on a dark day.
And there are those who think
